Athletics at Saint CeciliaThe Saint Cecilia Sports Committee offers several sports for St. Cecilia students to participate in.
Sports offered include soccer from instructional (U6) all the way up to U14 for both boys and girls. We also offer volleyball,
currently only for girls, from 4th-8th grade as well as basketball for both boys and girls from 3rd -8th grade.
Both basketball and volleyball have season
ending tournaments and soccer offers several tournaments most notably the Bluegrass games that are held every summer.
The Bluegrass games are a well known event with several sports being represented and teams from all over the state participating. Saint
Cecilia has had several teams over the years that have medaled at the Bluegrass games with some winning gold. At
the end of each season the U6 teams all receive medals and the U8 boys and girls receive trophies that are paid for by the
sports committee.
The
sports committees goals are to make sure that sports programs are offered to all children. Also, that
any child, regardless of the level of athletic ability they possess, be able to participate and to play at least
1/2 of each game. The committee charges fees for each sport but no child will ever be turned away due to lack of
ability to pay.
The
sports committee also offers a one time $500 scholarship each year to a graduating student/athlete that
will be attending a parochial high school. This is based on a written essay about what playing sports for St. Cecilia
has meant to them. This is awarded at the annual sports banquet along with the announcement of the male and female
athlete of the year. This award is voted on by the students in the same grade and is offered to 7th and 8th graders. Each
student participating in sports also receives an award at the sports banquet.
Sports offered by the Committee include:
Boys' and Girls' Soccer -- Fall and Spring
Girls' Volleyball --
Fall
Boys' and Girls' Baskeball -- Fall/Winter
Girls' Dance Team -- Fall/Winter
Mascot -- The Crusader
The Crusades were a serious of military campaigns of a religious character, waged by Christians during the period
between 1095 and 1291. The Crusades originally had the mission of recapturing the Jerusalem and the Holy Land from
the Seljuq Turks. The Crusades were launched by Pope Urban II in response to pleas from the Byzantine Empire for
assistance against the Turks. The Pope also saw this as an opportunity to reunite Christianity, which had been
divided by the Great Schism in 1054.
The Crusades drew many of the greatest individuals of the age to
take up the Cross and the mission. These included Louis VII and Saint Louis IX of France, Queen Eleanor
of Aquitaine and her son, King Richard the Lionheart of England, Baldwin III of Jerusalem, William of Tyre, Balian of Ibelin,
and others. Despite the actions of some Crusaders, Crusaders have been remembered historically as individuals
of great honor and faith who fought for the Supreme Cause.
